CLASS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Grading Scale:
A=100-90 B=89-80 C=79-70 D=69-60 F=59-0
Absences:
Students are responsible for making up missed assignments and classwork resulting from absences. Students should notify their teachers before an absence if possible. If students are unable to let their teachers know ahead of time, students should contact their teachers as soon as they return in order to make up all work and prepare for upcoming assignments.
Canvas:
Our class lessons and resources can be found on Canvas. If you miss class, Canvas lessons are available to help you make up the work you missed. To access my Canvas page, click here. For help navigating Canvas, click here.
Powerschool/SchoolNet/Formal and Informal assignments:
New this year, CMS will be assessing students using a three tier model. The first level is Prepare and is worth 20% of a student's grade. Prepare grades consist of homework, warm-ups, minor in-class assignments and any lesson used for instruction. The next tier is Rehearse and is worth 30% of a student's grade. This includes labs, classwork, quizzes, small projects, coached assignments and any assignment in which a student is practicing a skill that has been taught previously. The top tier is Perform and is worth 50%. Perform includes writing assignments, tests, assessments, large projects and any assignment where a student is proving mastery. Regardless of the tier, students can retake any assignment before the end of the quarter. Retaking Perform assignments however does require evidence of additional preparation.Tests will be taken on SchoolNet and can be accessed remotely via the NCEdcloud portal. Grades can be accessed at any time on-line through your Powerschool account. NOTE: grading can be a lengthy process, so grades may not always be current when you check. Please be patient when waiting for longer assignments to post. All work must by the last day of the term. Requests for additions or changes should be made before that date. All students are encouraged to check powerschool three days before the end of the term in order to be sure that all work has been submitted. If students or parents have a question about a grade, they need to ask before grades are submitted and finalized.
Homework:
Homework is assigned most sessions except in cases of a Holiday vacation or a major test. Homework completion is essential to scoring a high grade for this class. Assignments must be available when requested by teacher. Any work not provided at the time it was requested will be considered late (getting work from lockers will not be allowed). Students should write their FIRST and LAST name as well as their class period on every paper assignment. Written late work should be submitted through the late work basket only . It should not be submitted with current assignments. Homework assignments will be written on the top left corner of the homework board for each session-BE SURE TO WRITE YOUR ASSIGNMENTS DOWN.
Make-ups, Tutoring and Help Sessions:
Any perform grade may be retaken for a higher grade. Students are required to undergo additional instruction before retesting is allowed. This may be achieved through tutoring or doing test corrections. Students wishing to make test corrections may down load the test corrections form here. Tutoring will be offered every week on Thursdays before school from 8:15-8:45. Students who are unable to attend or seek additional help may set up appointments to come in at other times. Regardless of whether, students are coming in for the regular session or by appointment, students need to provide their request in writing and submit it at least one day prior. Additional test review sessions will also be offered before school (8:15) the day of each test. No prior notification is needed for these sessions. Each morning before a unit test, there is a review session. Please use these sessions to help ensure you are prepared for the test.
Materials:
Students should be coming to class every day with their composition book and writing utensil. Students will be asked to place materials into their composition books so tape, scissors and glue sticks are also strongly encouraged. Cell phones are not permitted and may be confiscated if on or out.
Technology:
At CMS we are fortunate to have Chromebooks for each student. Students will be using the Chromebooks on most days and may use the Chromebooks for note taking if they choose. Students may also bring their own Chromebooks or laptops from home. However, students need to be aware that the technology is a privilege and they may lose the privilege to use technology if they misuse the technology. NOTE: phones and similar devices are banned under school rules and may be confiscated and surrendered to the office.

Materials and A/B Day
Students are to report to class with their social studies composition book and a writing utensil. Tape is highly recommended! It is imperative this composition book is brought to every class and is maintained throughout the year.
Social studies is taught as instructional sessions. Each A day/B day is numerically designated as a session and it is essential that students label items from each session correctly. This systematic approach avoids confusion especially when absent or preparing for a test. For the CMS A/B day schedule, click here.
Curriculum/NC Final Exam
We follow the North Carolina state curriculum for 6th grade Social Studies. The curriculum can be found at the link below. www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/curriculum/socialstudies/scos/unpacking/6th.pdf
Though students are no longer assessed on their knowledge of Social Studies by the North Carolina Final exam, you may want to assess for yourself how much your child has learned. Released items from previous tests can be found using the following link. http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/accountability/common-exams/released-items/g6ssrel1617.pdf
Curriculum Night/23-24
